The UFCW has stated that it wants to hurt Bashas' business or destroy the company, and it is using a current scam based on claims that Bashas' sold a lot of out-of-date formula.  To make its claim look valid, it created a group called the "Hungry for Respect Coalition," which claims it is concerned about the health of infants in Arizona and is trying to stop people from shopping at Bashas'.

The problem for the UFCW is that they've tried this scam one too many times.

Just last week, the UFCW used another front group, called "California Healthy Communities Network" to release a so-called "report" attacking a non-union California grocery store (Farmer Joe's).

  • Do you know what the UFCW-front group claimed?  That Farmer Joe's sold out-dated product.
  • Do you know what product the UFCW-front group claimed was out dated?   Infant formula.

And it doesn't stop there.   The UFCW has done this before -- most notably in dealing with Food Lion, another non-union grocery chain.  There, the UFCW used a front group and even got ABC's PrimeTime Live to manufacture a story about the company selling bad food.  It took a jury in North Carolina to set the story straight, awarding damages against ABC.
